True Love Pictorial v1 #3, 1953 - The first of three 100 page giants, this special issue features three tales by
Matt Baker. “Trouble's Daughter” tells of a girl who tries to raise her social standing, just as he father gets out of prison. Baker’s pencils are evident but the inks appear to be by another artist (this story was later reprinted in
Going Steady #10. In “The Sisters”, a younger sibling takes advantage of the older one on several occasions. The opening scene is static and straightforward, but the artwork improves with each subsequent page. “Romance by Blackmail” edges out the rest as the artist’s best work, featuring an ambitious social climber who finds an opportunity for blackmail. The darkened, heavy deluge on the opening page suggests the bad behavior to come. In addition to his three stories, Baker also contributes the stunning, verdant cover. Also, despite what comic book guides say, there is no
Joe Kubert art in this issue. Other artists in this comic include Ric Estrada and Hy Rosen. This is 2 of 10
True Love Pictorial issues by
Baker.
