Joe Kubert (1926-2012) - After emigrating from Poland as an infant, Kubert's parents settled in New York City and encouraged his nascent drawing abilities. He attended Manhattan's High School of Music and Art while looking for work from various publishers. His first professional comics work was a brief story from
Catman Comics #8. Kubert was there during of the Golden Age of Comics, but also contributed to the Silver Age with the re-introductions of
Hawkman and the
Flash. By the 1960s-1970s, the artist firmly established himself as a master of both the war and adventure genres with the titles
Star Spangled War Stories,
Our Army at War and
Tarzan. Notably, he also founded the
Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1976, providing a starting ground for future comic book professionals. Kubert's loose, impressionistic style was influenced by the great newspaper strip artists of the past. Though sometimes lacking definition in the later years, his artwork always conveyed fluidity, movement and excitement. Read more on
