Pictorial Romances v1 #23, 1954 - In an unusually lengthy tale, a young newlywed finds that her mother will stop at nothing to break up her marriage. The standard cover by Matt Baker doesn't do justice to the corresponding interior story. His layouts vary on nearly every page, enhancing his sumptuous drawings. Beautiful and elegant, the artwork also employs several useful visual devices. On page 12 panel 2, the main character looks into a mirror, where her husband is distantly placed. Their fraying relationship is encapsulated in this single panel. Much less impressive is Baker's tiny illustrations for a two page text story. Other artists in this golden age romance comic include Ric Estrada and Mike Sekowsky. This is 20 of 21 Pictorial Romances issues by Baker.
