Pictorial Romances #17 st. john golden age 1950s romance comic book cover art by Matt Baker
Matt Baker
Pictorial Romances v1 #17, 1953 - The first of several giant editions, this issue boasts of no less than six Matt Baker stories. "Sharecropper's Daughter" tells of a woman dominated by the son of an old farmer, while a former reform school kid seeks acceptance in "Black-Balled". In "Love Demon", a girl's fiancee' ignores corruption at her uncle's construction firm. All three are sumptuously drawn with fine detailing throughout. Page layouts and sequencing are carefully considered. "Strange Relationship", in which a newspaper owner's daughter takes over, is slightly marred by an unknown inker. More than a few panels lack clarity and definition. All four of these original Baker works display more depth and maturity than his two earlier stories: "They Caught Me Cheating At Love" and "I Played At Love". Along with Joe Kubert's "The Heart's Trophy", these tales were first published in Pictorial Confessions #3. Other artists in this golden age comic include Hy Rosen and Ric Estrada. NOTE: copies may exist where this cover was combined with previously published St. John romance comics instead of the contents below. This is 14 of 21 Pictorial Romances issues by Baker.
