Star Spangled War Stories #170 - Walt Simonson art, Joe Kubert cover

Joe Kubert
Star Spangled War Stories v1 #170 featuring the Unknown Soldier, 1973 - In the midst of a space battle, a deserter escapes to a nearby planet. Though uninhabited by people, a massive weapons machine is still active. Some of Walt Simonson's faces and figures border on the primitive. These are partially offset by his fine technological landscapes. His experimentations with sequencing and typography are also mildly successful, with the exception of the obscure story title on page 2. This back-up tale was later reprinted in The Art of Walt Simonson. Joe Kubert contributes a typically fine cover. This is number 1 of 3 Star Spangled War Stories issues with Simonson art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Simonson, Kubert or Star Spangled War issues.
