Walt Simonson (1946-) - Already armed with a geology degree, Simonson pursued his passion for illustration at Rhode Island School of Design. By the early 1970s, the artist began getting assignments from DC Comics, the first being a short story for
Weird War Tales #10. From there, he quickly won accolades (along with writer Archie Goodwin) for their work on the Manhunter serials, appearing within
Detective Comics. A decade later, the artist would migrate over to Marvel Comics and revitalize their lagging
Thor title with new characters and inventive plots. Simonson used linework to great effect, often creating patterns and textures instead of shadows. His innovations in page layout, panel shapes and sequencing also contributed to making him a standout of the 1970s and 1980s. Read more on
