Creepy v1 #15, 1967 - Hellbent on revenge, Thane the barbarian tracks his former compatriots to a mysterious city in the desert. Starting with a full page splash, Steve Ditko brings this sword and sorcery tale to life. His added greytones enhance the settings more so than the characters. Still, his artwork has a richness not often seem in his full color comics. In Neal Adams' story, a deputy searches for a missing professor in an old mine shaft. Little does he know that a passage leads into Earth's prehistoric past. Adams shows off his mastery of perspective on the opening splash. Remaining pages display a mature draftsmanship despite his relative youth. Related to the story is Frank Frazetta's cover of cavemen emerging from the mist. Though monochromatic, it has an ethereal beauty unmatched by other Warren covers. Ditko's "City Of Doom" was reprinted in
Eerie v3 #135, while Adams' "The Terror Beyond Time" later appeared in both >
Eerie v3 #97 and
#125. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Joe Orlando, Jerry Grandenetti, Johnny Craig and Gil Kane. This is 2 of 5
