Our Army at War v1 #179 presents Sgt. Rock, 1967 - Tensions flare when a new soldier joins the outfit. An overt racist, Sharkey makes life difficult for Jackie Johnson, Easy Company's only African-American. Both Marvel and DC addressed racial issues during this era, much to their credit.
Joe Kubert's rough-hewn style conveys both conflict and camaraderie within the same tale. On page 8, the artist creates a clever split-portrait of the two main characters (see interior page below). In addition, Kubert's nobly illustrated cover does justice to the story inside. This tale was later reprinted in
DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #18. Other artists in this silver age comic include Jack Abel. This is 116 of 236
