Detective Comics v1 #497, 1980 - On a mission for the US government, Batman goes to Mexico to secure top secret documents in a villain's possession. Named for his criminal network rather than super powers, the rather buffoonish Squid makes his first appearance. Don Newton's Batman is as dark and ominous as his best renditions. His highlighting and shadows always heighten the drama of the scenes. Dan Adkins once again proves himself as the best inker for Newton's organic style. This story was later reprinted in Tales of the Batman: Don Newton #1 and Tales of the Batman: Gerry Conway #1. Other artists in this comic include Jose Delbo and Joe Giella. Cover by Jim Aparo. This is 17 of 39 Detective Comics issues by Newton. /// key 1st appearance Squid
