Don Newton (1934-1984) - Growing up in Arizona, Newton was heavily involved in the science fiction and comics community, submitting illustrations for their many publications. Eventually, Charlton Comics hired him to draw his first professional piece in
Ghost Manor v2 #18. Subsequent work led to his memorable run on the
Phantom. Work for both DC and Marvel soon followed. Like
Bernie Wrightson, the artist often used heavy shadows and dramatic lighting. Newton, however, had a softer, lighter touch. There was a fluidity to his brushwork and a strong sense of movement within his layouts. His drawings were less menacing and more approachable, making him well-suited for a variety of superhero titles. Read more on
