| Detective Comics #500 |
Detective Comics v1 #500, 1981 - This five hundredth issue features not only Batman and Robin, but several other DC stars as well. Notably, Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, contributes a lengthy text story. Most notable in my opinion is a brief Walt Simonson Batman tale. Though only two pages, his stunning artwork and layouts are accompanied by only minimal text. His sharp, angular style matches his early work, making this tale more likely from the 1970s. Joe Kubert delivers a Hawkman and Hawkgirl adventure, which delves into the Martian Manhunter's past. While not at the same level as his silver age Brave and Bold issues, his style is nonetheless appealing and engaging. Note that both Simonson and Kubert drew some of the figures on the cover. This issue also includes artwork by Tom Yeats, Jose Garcia Lopez, Jim Aparo, Carmine Infantino, Bob Smith and Dick Giordano. This is 11 of 12 Detective Comics issues by Simonson. /// key Milestone issue- - - - - - - - - -
