Savage Sword of Conan #16 - Barry Smith, Walt Simonson art

Savage Sword of Conan #16
Savage Sword of Conan v1 #16, 1976 - In chapter five of the history of the Hyborian Age, Aquilonia goes to war with its neighboring states. Meanwhile, the Picts coalesce around the barbarian leader Gorm. Walt Simonson's already jagged style becomes more chaotic with each battle scene. The violent events culminate in a catastrophe, which the artist frames in a final splash page. Barry Smith's contribution to the issue is even longer, chronicling a barbarian king’s crucifixion during the Pax Romana (see interior page below). Tim Conrad, a Smith emulator, provides surprisingly detailed inks. A few pages overwhelm the pencils toward the story’s end. Most impressive is Smith’s opening scene, featuring a panoramic view of the characters and setting across a two-page spread. Other artists in this magazine include John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala. This is 2 of 2 Savage Sword of Conan issues by Smith and 5 of 7 Savage Sword of Conan issues by Simonson.
