Blue Ribbon Comics v2 #5 |
Teen-Age Diary Secrets / Blue Ribbon Comics v2 #5, 1949 - Delving into new territory, St. John publishing puts out their third romance comic of the series. Matt Baker contributes two stories for this issue. "I Tried to Make Love Pay Dividends" tells the tale of a pretty nurse with ambitions to marry one of her wealthiest male patients (this was later retitled "I Deserted My Ideals for an Easy Life" and reprinted in Teen-Age Romances #17). In "I Was a Broadway Casualty", a small town actress travels to New York, finding only rejection (this was later retitled "Men Offered Me Stardom - If I Would Pay Their Price" and reprinted twice, in Pictorial Romances #6 and True Love Pictorial #11). Both Baker tales open with large, but poorly composed title panels. His layouts are sorely lack variation. Many scenes and sequences are monotonous in composition (see interior page below). Thankfully, the artist would make great strides in only a few short years. Other artists in this golden age romance comic include Warren Kremer. This is number 3 of 3 Blue Ribbon Comics issues by Baker.
