House of Mystery v1 #180, 1969 - A barbarian takes on the daunting task of slaying a dragon that's terrorizing a local village. Gil Kane's pencils do not disappoint on this heroic tale, aided by
Wally Wood's smooth inking. The duo also collaborate on a shorter story, where Kane himself is embroiled in a mystery. This issue's best work is by
Bernie Wrightson, who tells of an Englishman who encounters a specter (see interior page below). Though early in his career, the artwork shows great skill and attentiveness.
Neal Adams wraps everything up in his typically monstrous cover design. "Scared to Life" was later reprinted in
House of Mystery #226), while "His Name is Kane" was later reprinted in both
Welcome Back to the House of Mystery #1 and
Limited Collectors' Edition #C-23. Other artists in this silver age comic include Joe Orlando and Sergio Aragones. This is 6 of 26
