Tarzan #207 - Joe Kubert art, cover

Tarzan of the Apes #207, 1972 - This first DC issue continues from the previous Gold Key series, and begins an adaptation of Tarzan’s origin. Joe Kubert begins his astonishing and lengthy run on this title, giving the character a fresh contemporary look. Unlike the smoother, friendlier lines of Russ Manning, Kubert permeates the book with a realistic and savage depiction not seen since Hal Foster's 1930s newspaper strips. The African jungle is a brutal, foreboding place in this version, with danger around every corner. The cover powerfully conveys this, as Tarzan struggles for his life against a great ape. The character would become one of Kubert's signature characters, along with Hawkman, Sgt. Rock, and Enemy Ace. Another Edgar Rice Burroughs creation, John Carter Warlord of Mars, begins as a back up series. See today's posts or more Kubert or Tarzan issues.
