Pep Comics v1 #1, 1940 - Predating Captain America Comics #1 by a year, the Shield makes his debut as the first patriotic hero of the golden age. Joe Higgins is an FBI agent who also takes on special assignments in a flag-themed costume. Also making their first appearances in separate stories: the Comet, a young scientist who can disintegrate objects with his eyes and the Falcon, a colorful crimefighter who protects freedom of the press. Various characters in different genres are introduced in their own tales, forgettable as they are.
