Captain America Comics v1 #1, 1941 - Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's greatest creation makes his first appearance, along with sidekick Bucky and the notorious Red Skull. Though not the first patriotic super-hero, Captain America becomes the most indelible one. Kirby's cover is busy and frenetic, but still nicely balanced. Note that Cap's stand against Hitler and the Nazis occurs eight months before the US entered World War II. Except for the opening origin story, Simon and Kirby share the pencilling and inking chores with the remaining Cap adventures. Some panels are better than others, but Kirby's title pages stand out for their boldness. Ironically, the best work of the issue (aside from the cover) are two unrelated backup stories. Kirby's "Stories from the Dark Ages" (featuring Tuk the Caveboy) and "Murder Inc." (starring the Hurricane) display the skill and draftsmanship of an artist far advanced of most of his golden age peers. In addition to Cap's origin, the Red Skull also makes his first appearance.
