Superman special #1 - Walt Simonson art & cover, Frank Miller, Barry Windsor Smith art + 1st issue

Walt Simonson

Superman special v2 #1
, 1992 - Following a massive explosion of an industrial lab, a Superman duplicate made of sand rises from the wreckage. At fifty pages, this is Walt Simonson's longest story to date. While his cover is somewhat mediocre, his story art has the same verve as some
of his earliest DC works. Inventive layouts and careful sequencing permeate the lengthy tale (see interior page below). Large, dramatic panels are ample throughout. The quality of his draftsmanship varies, but Simonson otherwise delivers in this first issue. Filling the rest of the issue is a series of pin-ups by prominent artists. Unfortunately, pages by Barry Smith and Frank Miller are just shy of adequate. Other artists in this modern age comic include Todd McFarlane. This is 1 of 1 Superman special issues by Miller, 1 of 1 Superman special issues by Simonson and 1 of 1 Superman special issues by Smith. /// key 1st issue
