Superman special #1 - Walt Simonson art & cover, Frank Miller, Barry Windsor Smith art

Walt Simonson
Superman special v1 #1, 1992 - Following a massive explosion of an industrial lab, a Superman duplicate made of sand rises from the wreckage. At fifty pages, this is Walt Simonson's longest story to date. While his cover is somewhat mediocre, his story art has the same verve as some of his earliest DC works. Inventive layouts and careful sequencing permeate the lengthy tale (see interior page below). Large, dramatic panels are ample throughout. The quality of his draftsmanship varies, but Simonson otherwise delivers something special. Filling the rest of the issue is a series of pin-ups by prominent artists. Unfortunately, pages by Barry Windsor Smith and Frank Miller are just shy of adequate. Other artists in this issue include Todd McFarlane. This is number 1 of 1 Superman special issues with Miller art and/or covers, number 1 of 1 Superman special issues with Simonson art and/or covers and number 1 of 1 Superman special issues with Smith art and/or covers.
