4. Epic Illustrated v1 #16, 1983 - Set in an unnamed medieval land and time, a young apprentice encounters a magical wall, a winged woman and the feeling of true, absolute love. Barry Smith's excellent drawings accompany his spare, poetic writing. Artfully paced and designed, the story pages benefit from a jewel-like, sophisticated color palette. Smith's second tale is brief, interesting and with a darkly written ending. His third contribution is a large illustration for a Conan text story, beautifully rendered and more typical of his sword and sorcery work. Cropped vignettes from the same drawing are interspersed throughout the remaining pages. Other artists in this issue include Rick Veitch, Marc Hempel, Dave Sim, Trina Robbins, Gene Day, Carl Potts and Terry Austin. This is 2 of 3 Epic Illustrated issues by Smith. /// Top 10 Smith comics
