| Savage Tales #1 |
Savage Tales v1 #1, 1971 - Marvel's early foray into black and white magazines, this series featured Conan, Ka-Zar and several new characters. The origin and first appearance of the Man-Thing makes this issue significant. Biochemist Ted Sallis tries to remake the super soldier formula that made Captain America, but circumstances instead turn him into a monster. Barry Smith opens his exceptional Conan tale with a spacious two-page spread. The scene pits the barbarian against two vikings, set atop a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Reflecting the title's more mature audience, a female temptress also displays some mild nudity. Overall, Smith's art has a rawness and excitement comparable to his regular Conan issues from the same era. "The Frost Giant's Daughter" was reprinted in Savage Sword of Conan #1 and Conan #16 (modified and in color). Roy Thomas' "Man-Thing" story was drawn by Gray Morrow and reprinted in Monsters Unleashed #3. This issue also includes artwork by, Gene Colan, Tom Palmer, John Romita and John Buscema. After appearances in Astonishing Talesand Fear, the Man-Thing would have his own self-titled series by 1974. This is 1 of 4 Savage Tales issues by Smith. /// key 1st appearance Ted Sallis as the Man-Thing, 1st issue
