Weird Western Tales #12 - Neal Adams / Bernie Wrightson art, Joe Kubert cover

Joe Kubert
Weird Western Tales v1 #12 featuring El Diablo & Jonah Hex, 1972 - After appearing in the final two issues of All-Star Western, Jonah Hex begins a lengthy run in this continuation of the series. El Diablo, a supernatural western hero, also makes the transition with the help of two great bronze age artists: Neal Adams and Bernie Wrightson. Their collaborations are rare and the results are often varied. In this case, their respective styles tend to clash, each trying to gain dominance over the other. The final story art is disappointingly rough and uncharacteristically muddy. Joe Kubert's cover as also far from his best, but do I like the subtle suggestion of a skull framed around El Diablo. Other artists in this issue include Tony DeZuniga, Nick Cardy and Carmine Infantino. This is number 1 of 3 Weird Western issues with Adams art and/or covers, number 1 of 1 Weird Western issues with Wrightson art and/or covers and number 1 of 2 Weird Western issues with Kubert art and/or covers.
