Rom #18 - Frank Miller cover, mis-attributed Walt Simonson cover

Frank Miller
Rom (Spaceknight) v1 #18, 1981 - The X-men join forces with the spaceknight against an alien hybrid, concluding a two-part storyline. On Frank Miller's cover, the creature's limbs help frame the characters within a crowded yet cohesive layout. Of the three heroes in the background, Storm's face is inexplicably more sinister-looking. That aside, the artwork's crisp inking should be credited not to Walt Simonson (as attributed by some comic book guides) but to Terry Austin. Other artists in this copper age comic include Sal Buscema, Al Milgrom and Frank Giacoia. This is 4 of 4 Rom issues by Miller.

Terry Austin Inks, I'd bet money on it.

Compare Simonsons inks over Miller on that Spiderman fighting samurai's cover and you'll see the difference clearly.

Both are VERY interesting inkers over Miller and a much welcome break from the all too familiar but masterful Janson interpretation of Miller pencils.

I was nuts for Austin too and was happy to buy this for the cover alone upon it's release. I still stop and stare whenever I see it on-line or in my collection.

That storm is killer and makes me wish Miller had drawn at least one issue of the X-men in the early eighties. With Austin inks of course.

After looking at again, I agree with you. Overstreet credits Miller and Simonson with Austin inks and Marvel Wiki only credits Miller. Thanks for pointing that out.
