Phase #1 |
Phase v1 #1, 1971 - An independent one-shot,
Phase gathered the work of some of the best artists of the bronze age.
Frank Brunner illustrates the lead tale, a sword and sorcery epic that hints at the young artist's future potential. This story was later reprinted in both
The Unknown Worlds of Frank Brunner #2 and
Monsters Unleashed #2.
Jeff Jones uses his stark, high contrast approach to capture the quiet void of space in "Home" (reprinted in
Ravens and Rainbows #1). Perhaps most memorable is
Neal Adams' "A View from Without", an alien's insights into the horrors of the Vietnam War. The artist's mix of photographs and drawings adds a greater sense of realism each page. Adams' story was reprinted in
Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction #1. Lastly,
Bernie Wrightson has an impeccably drawn sci-fi image following the contents page. Other artists in this issue include Gray Morrow and Rich Buckler. Wrap-around cover by Ken Barr. This is 1 of 1
