World of Suspense #7 - Al Williamson art

World of Suspense #7
World of Suspense v1 #7, 1957 - A scientist fishes out a strange new sea creature, intent on using it for atomic radiation experiments. Despite the sci-fi theme, Al Williamson's layouts are a tad monotonous. Ralph Mayo's inks usually enhance the pencils, but has little effect in this case. Only one panel stands out: the scientist's confrontation with the creature in a darkened room (page 4). Not only is the scene heightened by dramatic lighting, but Williamson frames the panel in wide, painterly strokes. This story was reprinted in The Art of Al Williamson and Chamber of Chills v2 #13. Other artists in this golden age comic include Joe Maneely, Bernard Baily, Reed Crandall, Pete Morisi, Tony DiPreta and John Forte. Cover by Carl Burgos.
