Al Williamson (1931-2010) - Born in New York City, the artist spent his childhood in Colombia before returning to his birthplace. After studying at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School in NYC, he began drawing comics for various publishers by the late 1940s. His first published assignment appeared in Famous Funnies #166. He gained the most prominence for his science fiction work for EC, often collaborating with Frank Frazetta. Williamson's early work embodied a classical style reminiscent of the great adventure newspaper strips of the era. In subsequent years, his spontaneous, painterly approach gave way to a more streamlined look replete in fine detailing. His work on Star Wars, Blade Runner and Flash Gordon are great examples of that. Regardless of decade, Williamson always displayed a mastery of dynamic figure drawing that stood out among his peers.
