House of Mystery #229 |
House of Mystery v1 #229, 1975 - When a newlywed couple's car breaks down, the husband looks for help while the wife subsequently takes refuge at a nearby castle. It's creepy inhabitants, not surprisingly, have other plans for her.
Nestor Redondo's tale resembles DC's earlier attempts at gothic romance, although more frightful in tone. One of his longest bronze age works, the artist paces and composes the story with great skill. Each page is beautifully rendered, starting with the horrific opening splash to the shocking finale. Reprints fill the bulk of the issue, including work by
Alex Toth (
House of Mystery #187) and
Bernie Wrightson (
House of Mystery #183). The cover borrows art from the interior story and the cover of
DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #4. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Wayne Howard and Mort Meskin. This is 11 of 16
