House of Mystery #229 - Nestor Redondo art, Bernie Wrightson, Alex Toth reprints

House of Mystery #229, 1975 - One of DC's last attempts at gothic romance, this 100 page super spectacular contains one of the longest tales of the entire series. The sheer length suggests it may have been originally slated for either Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love or Sinister House of Secret Love, two romance titles canceled only a few years before. The artwork, by mystery comics veteran Nestor Redondo, is simply stunning. His classical style is perfect in telling the tale of a newlywed that through an accident, finds herself in a mysterious castle. The artist's pacing is masterful, telling the story with clarity and grace while retaining th reader's attention. Redondo's gorgeous drawings eventually lead up to a full page splash for the shocking finale. The cover lazily uses interior panels from the story, with an old Wrightson demon (from DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #4) thrown in for good measure. There is also a Toth reprint from House of Mystery #187 and a Wrightson reprint from House of Mystery #183. This is number 11 of 16 House of Mystery issues with Redondo art and/or covers.
