Star Spangled War Stories #141 - Joe Kubert art & cover

Star Spangled War v1 #141 enemy ace dc comic book cover art by Joe Kubert
Joe Kubert
Star Spangled War Stories v1 #141 featuring Enemy Ace, 1968 - When one of his own brutish pilots challenges him to a duel, Enemy Ace has no choice but to accept. This tale of a soldier run amok is deftly illustrated by Joe Kubert. Among the many fine scenes, the full page splash of a mid-air collision (page 9) stands out due to its boldness. Adequately drawn, Kubert's cover benefits from the searing hot color palette. See today's posts or more Kubert or Star Spangled War issues. See also this blog's Joe Kubert checklist.

  1. The cover reminds me of Kurtzman.

  2. Really? I don't see it. Maybe because of the intense colo palette?

  3. It comes across much stronger in the thumbnail version. Certainly the color palette, but also the exaggerated proportions of the figures, the dramatic tension of impending violence, and bold, thick brushstrokes in the inking.
