Joe Kubert |
Weird Western Tales v1 #12 featuring El Diablo & Jonah Hex, 1972 - After appearing in the final two issues of
All-Star Western, Jonah Hex continues as a co-feature in this lengthy bronze age run. El Diablo, a supernatural western hero, also makes the transition with the help of
Neal Adams and
Bernie Wrightson. Their collaborations are rare and the results are often varied. In this case, their respective styles tend to clash, each trying to gain dominance over the other. The final story art is rough and uncharacteristically muddy.
Joe Kubert's cover on this
first issue as also far from his best, but do I like the subtle suggestion of a skull framed around El Diablo. This issue also includes artwork by Tony DeZuniga, Nick Cardy and Carmine Infantino. This is 1 of 3
Weird Western issues by
Adams, 1 of 2 Weird Western issues by
Kubert and 1 of 1 Weird Western issues by
Wrightson. ///
