X-men #54 - Barry Windsor Smith cover
X-men #54, 1969 - The Living Pharaoh kidnaps Cyclops' brother Alex Summers, but to what purpose? Barry Smith's second cover on the series is quite simply amateurish. Poorly drawn, haphazardly laid out, even depth and perspective are confusing. In addition, the villain's face seems to have been redrawn (by John Romita?) to little benefit. Other artists in this issue include Don Heck, Arnold Roth and Vince Colletta. This is number 2 of 9 X-men issues with Smith art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Smith or X-men issues. This cover also has plenty of alteration work by John Romita, meaning the powers that be were not too pleased with Smith's initial version.
