Witzend #1 |
Witzend v1 #1, 1966 - Wally Wood's self-published fanzine begins with this first issue, featuring artwork and stories previously unpublished. A potent sci-fi tale opens the issue, exceptionally drawn by Al Williamson. Originally produced for Buster Crabbe in the 1950s, the layouts and pacing of "Savage World" equal the skillfulness of the drawings. The story appears to have several inkers. Based on the fine detailing, Frank Frazetta is certainly one of them. Wood is also credited with inks, but I see little evidence of it. This story was later reprinted in Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction #1 and Alien Worlds #4 (first time in color, re-titled "Land of the Fhre"). Frazetta also contributes an unknown character portrait on the back page, his muscles revealed (Hulk-like) through his tattered shirt. Finally, Wood himself introduces his own creation, Animan, in the first of several chapters. Compellingly drawn, the opening splash is especially good (see interior page below). This issue also includes artwork by Ralph Reese and Angelo Torres. This is 1 of 5 Witzend issues by Frazetta, 1 of 2 Witzend issues by Williamson and 1 of 10 Witzend issues by Wood. /// key 1st issue
