Detective Comics #503 - Don Newton art, Jim Starlin cover

Jim Starlin
Detective Comics v1 #503, 1981 - Tainted by an unknown chemical, the Batman must enlist Robin and Batgirl to do further detective work. Jim Starlin's cover evokes a horror movie feel with his scarecrow theme.  Some panels in Don Newton's story art are a bit crowded (page 10) and chapter headings could have used larger panels for variety. In general though, his drawings are engaging and energetic. Dan Adkins' inks add their usual polish. This story was later reprinted in Tales of the Batman: Gerry Conway #1. This is 22 of 39 Detective Comics issues by Newton and 3 of 4 Detective Comics issues by Starlin.
