Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #179
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories v1 #179, 1955 - In Duckburg's canoeing competition, Donald squares off against a good-luck prone Gladstone Gander. As usual, our hero creates his own predicaments, delightfully rendered by Carl Barks. Of the individual contests, the rescue of a portly character named Porkmuscle J. Hamfat has the most visual impact. This story was later reprinted in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #479. Other artists in this golden age comic include Paul Murry. This is 139 of 280 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories issues by Barks.

I am elated someone else remembers Porkmuscle J Hamfat. When my kids were little I told them about Monsieur Hamfat and they thought I was ready for the fruit farm. He bobbed on the water like a cork. Even at the age of six I knew the laws of physics and structural materials were clearly violated when PJH landed in G Gander's canoe. And how about that enthusiastic crowd, eh?
Every Sunday after church we went into an old-time candy and news store with a soda fountain in the back where I bought a comic (including this one) with my meager allowance. This joint had everything a hoarder dreams of. WDC&S and Uncle Scrooge were my favorites, but Gladstone Gander wasn't far behind. I also had a particular fascination with O G Wotasnozzle, a madcap inventor who appeared irregularly in the back of Popeye comic books. OGW was far darker than Disney's mild-mannered Gyro Gearloose. My favorite OGW episode was "What Did He Say (a Story of Words)", wherein the genius crates word pills for his friend Sappo, who was stricken with laryngitis. I sincerely hope this marvelous episode is never forgotten in our cultural history.
