Shock Suspenstories v1 #5, 1952 - Hatred builds when a young Jewish couple moves into a quiet neighborhood. Threats and harassment ensue, eventually leading to violence. This tale of anti-semitic hate is palpable, made even more so by Wally Wood's stark illustrations. The horrific scenes of arson (see interior page below) allow for greater detail and contrast. The artist saves his best work however, for his unrelated cover of a lynching. The victim's body hangs from above, unobscured by the large masthead, while local thugs stand smugly below. Wood delivers one of EC's most profound and disturbing covers for that era. Other artists in this golden age comic include Jack Davis, Jack Kamen and Joe Orlando. This is 4 of 14 Shock Suspenstories issues by Wood.
