Tales to Astonish v1 #13, 1960 - Far from the lovable character in the Guardians of the Galaxy film, the original Groot intended to uproot an entire village for study on his home planet. Jack Kirby draws his first appearance with his usual gusto. His collaboration with Steve Ditko on the next story, "I Found The Abominable Snowman", seems more polished and a fine melding of both their artistic styles (this was later reprinted in Chamber of Darkness #7). The issue's best work, however, is Ditko's tale of a sculptor who carves a lovely woman out of wood. His renderings show considerable skill and effort, not dissimilar to the actions of the main character. This issue also includes artwork by Don Heck. - - - - - - - - - -
