Matt Baker |
Classic Comics v1 #32 / Lorna Doone, 1946 - In his only work for
Classic Comics / Classics Illustrated,
Matt Baker draws the first comic book adaptation of R.D. Blackmore's novel. At 52 pages, this is among the longest stories of the artist's career. As a result, the pacing and sequencing tend to drag on certain pages. The layouts are straightforward with little variance. Like other works, Baker draws the female characters with glamor and femininity (see interior page below). Certain pages and panels stand out, but most of the interiors are fairly conservative. Two exceptions are the dream-like opening splash introducing the main characters and the scenic, yet intense cover design. Unlike this first edition, subsequent reprints alarmingly omit several pages. Even later reprints replace Baker's dramatic cover. This is 1 of 1
