Astonishing #60 |
Astonishing v1 #60, 1957 - On an expedition to the Philippine seas, a scientist and his crew of sailors encounter an enveloping mist and a legendary sea serpent. Al Williamson uses both open and framed panels to increase space and scale throughout the story. The tropical and ocean settings are lushly detailed. Williamson's drawings are especially beautiful in their renditions of water and waves (see interior page below). Just as important, Ralph Mayo's inks bring clarity and polish the pencils. This story was later reprinted in in Monsters Unleashed #7. Other artists in this golden age science fiction comic include Syd Shores and Pete Morisi. Cover by Bill Everett. This is 2 of 2 Astonishing issues by Williamson.
