Frontier Western #6 - Al Williamson art

Frontier Western #6
Frontier Western v1 #6, 1956 - Armed with his pearl-handed pistols, a sheriff draws the ire of two outlaw brothers. Al Williamson boldly opens with a gunfight with two combatants primed and ready to go. This large, unframed panel features an amorphous background shape that fills in the scenery (see interior page below). The technique is risky and innovative for the time, yet effective at getting the reader’s attention. Subsequent page layouts are fairly standard. Williamson’s drawings also begin to lose a bit of clarity the story progresses. Other artists in this golden age comic include John Severin, Dick Ayers and Gene Colan.
