Western Bandit Trails / Approved Comics v1 #9, 1954 - This odd little series reprinted random St. John comics in their entirety (in this case Western Bandit Trails #3). A few had brand new covers, such as this fine example by Matt Baker. In a nearly rectangular path, the reader's eye is led from the heroine to the foreground gunman, up the campfire toward the second outlaw. Baker's layout is complex but clearly defined and well executed. Despite what comic book price guides say, there is no new Baker story art. Other artists in this golden age western comic include Howard Larsen. This is 2 of 4 Approved Comics issues by Baker.
