Marvel Team-Up #79 - John Byrne art & cover

John Byrne
Marvel Team-Up v1 #79, 1979 - Housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a mystical amulet resurrects an ancient Stygian wizard. In response, an equally ancient sword transforms Mary Jane Watson into Red Sonja. This is John Byrne's last full length Spider-man story on the series, and his most visually spectacular. His pages are masterfully paced and composed, building up to a full page splash of the she-devil with a sword. The pencils are beautifully finished off by Terry Austin, no surprise given the pair's stunning work on the X-men series. Even more fascinating is Byrne's rendition of Red Sonja, drawn to match the style of artist Frank Thorne. This is 19 of 22 Marvel Team-Up issues by Byrne. /// Byrne gallery
