Showcase #82 - Joe Kubert cover + 1st Nightmaster

Joe Kubert
Showcase v1 #82 featuring Nightmaster, 1969 - A rock and roll musician is pulled into another dimension, where a defeated civilization tells him of his magical birthright. Now wielding the Sword of Night, he becomes the Nightmaster. Perhaps the first sword and sorcery hero in comics, this hero preceded Conan the Barbarian by less than a year. Joe Kubert's sketchy approach is more often seen on DC western and war titles. Here, his cover art seems to struggle with the fantasy genre. This is compounded by the large text and masthead / trade dress that occupy much of the space. Inside, the Denny O Neil story was drawn by Jerry Grandenetti and Dick Giordano.
