Dear John / The Alex Toth Doodle Book SC

Alex Toth
Dear John / Alex Toth Doodle Book SC (softcover book), 2006 - Filled with sketches and the artist's copious notes, the black and white interiors make additional color completely unnecessary. Alex Toth's handwriting is clear and succinct, enlightening the reader with insights of his work and career. Though the entire book is a visual feast, perhaps the most fascinating section is toward the end. Toth shares recollections and self-criticism of past works including "Monument" from Eerie #3, "Unreal" from Creepy #78 and "White Devil, Yellow Devil" from Star Spangled War #164. Compared to other artist compilations, this book has a more personalized feel, giving a better understanding of not only the artist but his thinking processes.
