Iron Man v1 #163, 1982 - Rich industrialist Obadiah Stane creates a team of assassins to go after his rival Tony Stark. Dubbed the Chessmen, they comprise of the King, Queen, Knight, Bishop and the Rook. Iron Man's figure seems initially awkward, but Jim Starlin's severe tilt of the horizon makes it almost justifiable. While not always successful, the clean white background makes it easy to frame the characters and focal point of the scene. Starlin's division of space is skillfully balanced, perfecting the layout. The placement of two chess pieces not only reflects the villain's theme, but reinforces the chessboard below. Other artists in this copper age comic include Luke McDonnell and Steve Mitchell. This is 7 of 7 Iron Man issues by Starlin. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Chessmen / Starlin gallery
