Journey Into Unknown Worlds #55 - Al Williamson art

Journey Into Unknown Worlds v1 #55, 1957 - Exiled in the frozen arctic, a ruthless dictator forms an unlikely army. Bill Everett's cover depicts them as ice creatures, although they're prehistoric cavemen in the story. Al Williamson and Ralph Mayo illustrate this tale with dependable craft and skill. Confined to only four pages, the artwork employs many panels yet the pacing doesn't fell rushed or erratic. With the exception of the first page (see inset above), the scenes abound with carefully managed and meticulous detail. This story was later reprinted in Where Monsters Dwell #38. Other artists in this issue include Jack Abel, Reed Crandall, Bob Forgione, John Forte and Don Heck. This is number 2 of 3 Journey Into Unknown Worlds issues with Williamson art and/or covers.
