Steve Ditko
Blue Beetle v5 #1, 1967 - Although this character can be traced back to the golden age, Charlton acquired the rights to this superhero in the silver age. After a less than memorable attempt at a revival, a new Blue Beetle makes his debut in this issue. Steve Ditko, not coincidentally the co-creator of another insect-themed hero, is assigned to this fifth generation title. The artist redesigns the outdated "masked adventurer" costume for one more suitable for a silver age superhero. Ditko applies his usual fine artistic skills, most evident in the well-designed fight scene in the opening splash. Of special note is the back-up feature, marking the first appearance of one of his most personal creations: The Question. Confined to fewer pages, the abundance of panels make the pages appear busier than necessary (the final page is especially cumbersome). While not as spontaneous as the main Blue Beetle feature, Ditko's Question is not without its merits. This is 1 of 5 Blue Beetle issues by Ditko. /// key 1st appearance Vic Sage as the Question, 1st issue
