Brave and the Bold #165

Brave and the Bold v1 #165, 1980 - The grotesque anti-hero Man-Bat steals a drug to heal his child's illness, only to find the Batman blocking his path. Jim Aparo's cover of Man-Bat flying with a baby in tow is one of silliest I've ever seen, but the scene does not appear in the story (thank goodness). Don Newton's sometimes monotonous layouts are largely offset by his beautiful penciling. The artwork is especially good on pages 9, 15 and 16, including the darkened conversation between Commissioner Gordon and Batman (see interior page below). This story was later reprinted in Tales of the Batman: Don Newton #1. Cover by Jim Aparo. This is 3 of 3 Brave and the Bold issues by Newton.
