Star Spangled War Stories v1 #143 featuring Enemy Ace, 1969 - After a general's inexperienced son is assigned to his squadron, Von Hammer must now ensure his survival.
Joe Kubert's opens with a memorable two-page spread, featuring a terrific portrait of Enemy Ace with an accompanying wolf. The artwork on the whole is exceptionally drawn, from the aerial dogfights to the strafing of enemy artillery (see interior page below). The most jarring image is Kubert's cover, depicting a doomed pilot saluting the victor. The title character's cool colors separate him from the pale, warm background. This story was later reprinted in
DC Special #26. Other artists in this silver age comic include John Costanza. This is 43 of 96
