Iron Man #109 - John Byrne cover + 1st Vanguard

Iron Man v1 #109, 1978 - Marking the first appearance of the Vanguard, he and the mutant Darkstar battle old shell-head on the surface of the moon. John Byrne's first cover on the series appears oddly off balance, even with the heavily tilted horizon. Three figures cram into the layout, leaving little room for dialogue or text. The villain's foreground leg looks disproportionately small in relation to the rest of his body. Terry Austin's inks shine, but Byrne's effort is decidedly clumsy. This story was written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by Carmine Infantino and Fred Kida.
