House of Mystery v1 #179, 1969 - In Bernie Wrightson's first professional work in comics, a mystery surrounds a man who disappears without a trace. Though only three pages, the art is skillful and conscientious, despite being a young artist. Note the heavy use of shadows in the interior page below. This technique would become one of the hallmarks of his work. This story was later reprinted in House of Mystery #228. Neal Adams follows his eerily monochromatic cover with the tale of an ambitious sailor and his faithful wife. The drawings are thoughtfully laid out, but the overall artwork is generally weak. Sadly, Joe Orlando's erratic inks have little compatibility with Adams' pencils. This story was later reprinted in Saga of Ra's Al Ghul #3, DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #17 and Limited Collectors' Edition #C-23. Other artists in this silver age comic include Jerry Grandenetti and George Roussos.
