Marvel Spotlight v1 #2 on Werewolf by Night, 1972 - This first appearance and origin of the Werewolf also showcases Mike Ploog's earliest work for Marvel. In a style not dissimilar to his mentor Will Eisner, the artist fills twenty-plus pages with a youthful enthusiasm. His dynamic pencils and precise brushwork capture both Jack Russell's humanity and his lupine counterpart's savagery. A high point is Ploog's dream-like transformation from man to beast on page 19. Neal Adams' cover is less visceral but compelling in its own way. Note how the Werewolf's figure portrait on the upper left bears no resemblance to the character inside. This Roy Thomas story was later reprinted in Power Records #PR-17. A 1950s Venus reprint by Bill Everett rounds out this bronze age horror comic. After two more issues, the werewolf would debut his own self-titled series. This is 2 of 2 Marvel Spotlight issues by Adams and 1 of 8 Marvel Spotlight issues by Ploog. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover, 1st origin Jack Russell as Werewolf by Night- - - - - - - - - -
