1st Issue Special #7 / The Creeper - Steve Ditko art & cover

Steve Ditko
First Issue Special v1 #7 featuring The Creeper, 1975 - One of Steve Ditko's signature creations from the 1960s, the Creeper is revived for a single issue in this series. Immediately evident is a disappointing lack of effort on the cover. Too many details are omitted and the composition is lacking. A urinating dog in the distant background hints at the artist's frustrations with the industry. Inside, Ditko's layouts are cramped and poorly designed, including the mediocre opening splash. Frankly, his efforts on this bronze age comic is a far cry from his earlier work on Beware the Creeper. This is 1 of 1 1st Issue Special issues by Ditko.

I've read that Ditko submitted a cover scene that was rejected by Carmine Infantino, who proposed his own cover sketch which Ditko was told to follow. Ditko reportedly did not think much of the cover idea either, hence the dog.

I thought the inking by Mike Royer was effective, even though I find his style less interesting over Kirby.

I agree with your assessment of Ditko's efforts here, but it's still WAY better than the crap he later troweled out during the late 70s and after. I started out as a fan, based on reprints of old Spider-Man and, especially, Dr. Strange. By the early 80s, I was groaning with disappointment every time I opened a comic and found Ditko art in it. What a shame.
